Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Young Sheldon’, CBS’s ‘Big Bang Theory’ Prequel About a 9- Year- Old Sheldon Cooper. Since it seems like America can’t get enough of The Big Bang Theory‘s Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons), CBS and Chuck Lorre have decided to show viewers what little Shelly was like when he was a 9- year- old prodigy. Young Sheldon, Lorre’s first single- camera sitcom, takes place in East Texas in 1. Sheldon (played by Iain Armitage) is getting ready to enter high school. Think of it: condescension and snarkiness coming from the mouth of a child! That’s comedy gold right there! A Guide to Our Rating System. Opening Shot: The opening of a pilot can set a mood for the entire show (think Six Feet Under); thus, we examine the first shot of each pilot.

The Gist: The “who, what, where, when, why?” of the pilot. Our Take: What did we think? Are we desperate for more or desperate to get that hour back? Sex and Skin: That’s all you care about anyway, right? We let you know how quickly the show gets down and dirty. Parting Shot: Where does the pilot leave us? Hanging off a cliff, or running for the hills?

Sleeper Star: Basically, someone in the Young Sheldon cast who is not the top- billed star who shows great promise. Most Pilot- y Line: Pilots have a lot of work to do: world building, character establishing, and stakes raising. Sometimes that results in some pretty clunky dialogue. Our Call: We’ll let you know if you should, ahem, Stream It or Skip It. YOUNG SHELDONOpening Shot: We see a close- up of 9- year- old Sheldon’s train set, and we hear the intro to Dire Straits’ ’8.

Walk of Life.” A Wonder Years- esque voiceover from Parsons as Adult Sheldon is layered on top (more on this later); he’s reveling in his joy of trains, saying that if he wasn’t a theoretical phyiscist, he would have wanted to be a “professional ticket taker… or hobo.” Then we cut to Young Sheldon (Armitage) using the train set to test Newton’s First Law. The Gist: Sheldon lives in East Texas with his family: his pious and protective mother Mary (Zoe Perry — coincidentally playing the role her mother, Laurie Metcalf, plays on Big Bang), football coach dad George Sr. Lance Barber), twin sister Missy (Raegan Revord) and older brother George Jr.

Montana Jordan). Shelly is about to enter high school at nine years old, leaving a relieved Missy to be at school by herself and joining George Jr., who’s mortified that his smart (and naievly smart- ass) little brother will be in the same class as he is. All Sheldon seems to be worried about is memorizing the student handbook so he knows who is and isn’t following the rules. Everyone in the Cooper family, including Sheldon’s dad, seem to barely tolerate Sheldon’s quirk and know- it- all attitude, but Mary knows he’s special. They’re bonded in a way the other kids aren’t, and while he doesn’t believe in God, he goes to church with her because “I believe in Mom.” We also see Sheldon’s first day of high school, and find out a lot about why such a special kid is going to public school, with teachers he thinks are unqualified and students who think he’s weird. Oh, and he thinks he’ll start a trend by wearing a bow tie to the first day of class. Photo: CBSOur Take: We’ve seen this pilot a couple of times now, and both times we thought the same thing: It’s warm, it’s got a lot of heart, but it isn’t all that funny. In a way, the way this plays out is quite a surprise for Chuck Lorre show; his shows usually start with broad, dumb jokes and get better as we get to know the characters. Here, we have a pretty good idea of all the characters from the start: Sheldon is more innocent than his adult counterpart, of course, but still has little to no awareness of how his words and actions affect people around him; Mary is his champion; George Sr. Sheldon, he seems to be a good man; Molly’s words are as cutting as Sheldon’s, but more in the “son of a bitch” variety; and George Jr. As the show develops and Armitage — who already seems to have Parsons’ persona down in the pilot — gets more comfortable as young Shelly, the show should slide into a nice rhythm where the humor comes from what we know about Sheldon then, not Sheldon now. As we said the show has a lot of warmth, which helps it out, even on laugh- track- crazy CBS.

One issue: Parsons’ voiceover. Lorre indicates that it will be used just as much during the season as it was in the pilot. It’s really not necessary; we know this is Sheldon Cooper 2. Parsons? (Parsons is an executive producer of the series, along with Lorre and Big Bang vet Steve Molaro, so that might be a reason why we hear from him.)Sex and Skin: Considering Sheldon didn’t have sex until a couple of years ago — and he’s 9 in this show — there isn’t much to talk about in this category. Photo: CBSParting Shot: In one of the funnier jokes of the pilot, Mary takes Sheldon to his weekend happy place — Radio Shack — and he says “In a world full of uncertainty, this place will be here forever!” As we know, Sheldon doesn’t always get everything right. Sleeper Star: Perry shines as Mary, bringing her own take to the role while reminding us of her mother’s BBT version.

A lot of the warmth in the pilot comes from her, though Barber also does a good job. Most Pilot- y Line: When Sheldon tells Missy “good luck with your finger painting” when she says how happy she is that he won’t be in 4rd grade with her.

That feels like the type of thing a more cynical adult Sheldon would say. Our Call: Stream It. As we said, Lorre shows get better as we get to know the characters. Considering we already like the characters in Young Sheldon, a refinement of the funny will make it even better. And, if we get more glimpses of Professor Proton (Bob Newhart), like we get in the pilot, it’ll make the show even more fun to watch.
