So he fell further into ‘speed balling,' shooting up cocaine‘His hair was longer and stringier (and weirder - - when he wore it in pigtails),' writes the author. More troubling was the impact of his addiction on the band’s music’. ‘He was also spending more time in the studio bathroom’. The band tried to get him into rehab.

He went along with the idea but checked himself out. Bill Kreutzmann, at the Hollywood Bowl., was considered the best looking of the band and he had groupies galore Garcia once described himself as ‘a hoodlum,’ growing up in Menlo Park. It was beat up or be beaten, he said.‘We did about all we could possible do. The heroin was stronger’,’said drummer Mickey Hart.

In the mid- fifties, Garcia regularly met up with his high school buddy, Laird Grant to jump the fence at the Golden State Dairy in Menlo Park, California and steal chocolate milk and ice cream from the parked trucks. One of many symbols used by the band. The prankster fun evolved into Garcia bringing and popping  pills, probably skimmed from someone’s parents' bathroom.‘He’d have ten or twelve different colored pills in his hand.

We’d take ‘em and drop em’,' Grant told the author. Garcia once described himself as ‘a hoodlum,’ growing up in Menlo Park.

It was beat up or be beaten, he said. Grant first met Garcia when the future rock star jumped him on the way to school. Garcia sat on his chest and smeared lipstick on his face while another kid tried to pull Grant’s pants off. Grant became the band’s first roadie and Jerry’s close friend.

When Garcia joined a garage band in the mid- Sixties in the Haight, acid- laced Kool Aid was served at every session. The Grateful Dead evolved out of that disparate band of musicians who learned to jam together in a garage.

They fled the Haight for Marin County, to escape the drug busts. Their drug- fueled antics at drummer Mickey Hart’s ranch included dragging a television set - still plugged in with a long entension cord - outside and set it up in a dry creek bed. Reagan was ‘the man who embodied everything the Dead despised about the straight world’, Browne writes. A DJ for radio station KMPX in San Francisco went out to the ranch to interview the band and the scene blew his mind.‘Everybody’s walking around stoned, and the chicks are naked. Garcia had a cowboy fantasy and wanted to learn horseback riding but when he went riding without tightening the horse’s cinch, he fell off and broke a few ribs. First and last time he was on a horse’, his girlfriend, Carolyn Adams, known as Mountain Girl, told the author.

He didn’t like horses after that’. Mountain Girl had been a Merry Prankster when she met Garcia, and they shared a love of pot and psychedelics.'Jerry was always one of those guys who drew women to him because he seemed needy’, Grant recalled. He never took care of his own s***, and he needed someone else to do that, like ‘Help me, be my old lady’.

Singer, harmonica player and keyboard player Ron Mc. Kernan, nicknamed Pigpen for his general state of dishevelment, carried a firearm and bullets with him, was more a drinker than a doper. He and Grant ‘together drank a quart of 1. Southern Comfort every day’. The alcohol took its toll and in 1.

MCKernan was found dead on the floor of his bedroom. He was 2. 7. The official cause of death – an internal hemorrhage. His weight had plummeted from 2. His body broke down from all the drinking and in the end he was living on sunflower seeds and alcohol.

Attending the funeral, Garcia commented, ‘Don’t ever let them bury me in an open casket – this is just awful’. Drumer Bill Kreutzmann admits to first taking acid at eighteen and loving it. Drinking his acid punch at parties, clothes came off and naked, wild dancing followed. The band was playing gigs but they were cash poor for a long time accruing massive debt with the record label and personal bank accounts. Kreutzmann had to poach deer on a friend’s property to have enough food to eat, Krerutmann reveals in his book. Viewed as the best looking member of the band. He counted thirteen that he slept with that night, one after the other. So he made thirteen his lucky number.

The Dead were invited to play Radio City Music Hall in 1. Members of the crew learned that a suspected drug dealer had slipped backstage.

They caught and pummeled him. They guessed he was there to supply Garcia who had an increasing fondness for ‘basically speedballing’. By 1. 99. 4, ‘Garcia appeared tired and increasingly disoriented during shows’. A year later, his descent was more obvious. He was passed out in the middle of the day. His body couldn’t handle it. He was being kind of aggressive about cleaning up and his body just couldn’t handle it,' Weir said of Garcia's death.
